Went to see “Doubt” last night after having dinner with Hec and MR. The movie was just ok in my opinion, but the performances by every character were quite powerful. I can see why so much buzz has been going around regarding Viola Davis’ role; in less than ten minutes she truly brought it home. Meryl was flawless as ever and I’m sure that she will definitely be nominated for yet another Oscar.
As far as deciding whether the priest really did what he was accused of? Hmm, I’d say guilty. But who knows?
Would I recommend this film? Certainly, especially to fans of Ms. Streep or Mr. Hoffman. Those who have seen the play will probably not love it as much. In a scale of one to ten it is a 7.5 for me.
Some scenes to keep an eye on: the one I previously mentioned with Davis and Streep; the scene between Hoffman and Adams after she receives a letter from her brother; and those that include reactions from the two altar boys. Obviously these scenes represent the director’s point of view, but they are helpful in shaping one’s opinion or decision about the priest’s guilt or innocence. In that respect, ctrating doubt, the film is quite effective.
Next: hopefully Clint Eastwood’s new film or “The Reader” with Kate Winslet.
